I’ll never forget the first time I put on a pair of glasses. I don’t remember what prompted my parents to get my vision checked, most likely I had failed a vision test at school. But I remember my mom bringing my glasses home after work one day. As I slipped them on my face I looked around in wonder. Everything looked so different. Edges were crisp and I saw the small details. I remember looking at my mom who began to cry. No one had realized how bad my vision had become.
Since then, there hasn’t been a day I’ve went without my glasses. They’re the first thing I reach for when I wake up in the morning. I’m so dependent on my glasses, so utterly sightless without them, that I’ve literally had to call someone to help me find them when they became misplaced.
I can’t imagine what it would be like to go without glasses, yet 1 in 7 people across the globe can’t get an eye exam and a pair of glasses. Lack of access can mean not living near an eye doctor. It can mean not being able to afford an exam or a pair of glasses. This lack of access is detrimental to their success in school, jobs and life.
Which is why this World Sight Day, I’m encouraging everyone to join OneSight to UNBLUR Life for the 1.1 billion people who need glasses, but lack access by visiting Unblur. Your support can help Unblur life for someone in need.
