Monday will be 12 weeks since I quit smoking.
I can not even express to you guys how happy I am that I was able to quit, especially considering that I didn’t use any form of smoking cessation tools this time!! My only smoking cessation aid was one of those electronic cigarettes that you can buy at the gas station or grocery store. When the withdrawal symptoms became too much to handle, I took a few puffs of the nicotine vapor and it was just enough to keep me from giving up!
Now that I am smoke-free, it’s time to concentrate on damage control!
I hate to admit it, but I was a smoker for 19 years – off and on. I have always hated smoking and I am always trying to quit! Aside from the dangerous health risks that smoking brings, there are also more immediate physical affects…like wrinkles, bad breath and tooth decay.
That’s right, tooth decay. Yuck!
One of the things that most people don’t realize is that smoking takes a nasty toll of your oral hygiene. Smoking cigarettes, with all of that heat that you inhale into your mouth, causes plaque build up on your teeth and to make matters worse, the nicotine and tar stain your teeth yellow.
After 19 years? My mouth is not a pretty sight.
Suffice it to say that I make a point not to smile with my mouth open very often. With the holidays coming up, I really want this to be the year that I can laugh and smile at our family functions without being afraid that someone is going to get a photo where my mouth is open.
I am not in a financial position to go and get that fancy laser teeth whitening, so I decided to look into at-home teeth-whitening products. Something I have never tried before is the new Colgate Optic White products – and boy, do they have a full line of products to choose from at my local Target! You can read all about my shopping trip for #Cbias at Target in this Google+ story.
Because I know what smoking does to my teeth, I have a pretty thorough routine as it is. I brush my teeth twice a day and I use mouthwash and dental floss on a daily basis. I wanted to make sure that Colgate Optic White would really give me the coverage I needed to maximize the results. I haven’t had a cavity (despite my love of sugary treats and my unhealthy cigarette habit) in years because I take such good care of my teeth. While I have plaque build-up every time I go to the dentist, I rarely have cavities, and I want it to stay that way!
When I got to Target, I found that they had a ton of Colgate Optic White products – everything from toothpaste in several different flavors to mouthwash and different kinds of toothbrushes!
I went to Target and bought a bunch of Colgate’s Optic White products: Colgate Optic White toothpaste, Colgate Optic White toothbrush (a value pack because I like saving money!), and Colgate Optic White mouthwash.
I chose the enamel white Colgate Optic White toothpaste because weak enamel is also an issue for my family, so I thought I’d kill two birds with one stone. I loved that there were different flavor options to choose from and that I had the option to chose the enamel white – not every whitening toothpaste serves more than one purpose and I appreciate finding a two-for-one when I can!
The flavors available at my Target were:
- Sparkling Mint
- Cool Mild Mint
- Enamel White
I also got a little two-pack Colgate Optic White single use toothbrushes to carry in my purse to use after meals. I love having these on hand when I go out to eat because I don’t have to worry about what kind of damage my meal will do before I get home, and I just can’t wrap my head around the thought of carrying a full size toothbrush and tooth paste in my purse! But these little pre-filled toothbrushes are perfect!
I did a little research on the Colgate Optic White products on the Colgate website earlier today and found that I should see results after four weeks of use. I am pretty excited about how much of a difference I am going to see in just a month! I am really hoping that my smile is whiter by the time we take our family holiday photos – this will be our first professional family photo in about five years and I really want it to be fantastic!
Besides just feeling more confident in myself knowing that my teeth are prettier, I am really looking forward to showing off my white smile at our family functions this holiday season – and believe me, there are plenty! Not to mention my husband’s office Christmas party; I’m sure you all know how stressful it can be preparing to attend one of your spouse’s work functions! The last thing I want to worry about when meeting his bosses is how dingy my teeth look!
I am starting to use my new Colgate Optic White toothpaste and tooth brush tonight, so I will be checking back in after four weeks to give y’all an update!
Wish me luck! While you’re at it, check out Colgate Smile on Twitter for tips on how to brighten your own smile!
