I Let My Teenager Get a Tattoo

So, here's the thing: I think I'm a cool mom.

I pretty much let Angeline do whatever she wants, because in her 15 years on this earth, she hasn't ever really asked me to do anything that I felt was inappropriate or didn't want her to do. She goes to the mall with friends, goes to the movies with friends, does sleepovers, etc.

Since she was about 12, she has been asking us to let her get a third piercing in her ears. We have been telling her that she has to wait until she is older. She had two earring holes by the time she was 12, isn't that enough? Sheesh! If she gets all of these piercings now, what is she going to do when she turns 18 and wants to rebel against us?

A few weeks ago, she came to me after school one day and said that she needed to talk to me. She pulled her hair to the side and lo and behold, she had a freaking earring sticking out of her ear that was not there before!

She had given herself a new earring hole with a safety pin one evening and started feeling guilty about it, so she came to tell me. She didn't want us to find out and then her get in trouble. (See what a good kid she is?)

I wasn't sure how to handle it. It looked pretty clean and she had been caring for it, so it wasn't infected. But the point was, we didn't want her to have a third piercing and she did it behind our backs.

Chris and I agreed that it had to come out, but we didn't punish her for doing it, since she was honest and confessed.

It's not like I don't let Angeline do crazy things every now and then. Remember that time I took her on a cruise with Carnival Cruise Lines for Spring Break?

I let her get a tattoo on the cruise! That's right, I let my teenager get a tattoo - even if was only temporary...

Henna and airbrushed tattoos still count as tattoos, right?

They totally count as far as I am concerned because they are not cheap.

Angeline thought it was the coolest thing ever, getting that airbrushed tattoo! She got a little scorpion but I can't seem to find the picture of her showing it off. I've deleted many of my photos from the cruise already, it makes me so sad that I can't find it!

Hopefully that was enough excitement for her to keep her satisfied with that whole tattoo thing until she's out of high school...

I think I am a cool mom, despite the lack of piercings.

But even if I'm not a cool mom, I don't care. I just want to be a good mom.

And I've totally nailed that already!

You had me scared for a minute! My brother is a tattoo artist, and my son thought that meant he could get a tattoo as a teen. I wouldn't let him, and I'm glad because the things he would have got at 16 are not things he would have wanted forever. He has one tattoo now, and it's a nice one.

Omg you had me fooled! Lol I totally thought you let her get a real one lol. I think you're a cool mom and a good mom. And I think you making her take the third earring out proves that. You are sticking to your guns and rules.

That was a great teaser. Even if I don't show it to my 15 year old.

At first I was like, are you crazy? LOL. My oldest son already had his ear pierced once and wanted another one and I said he had to wait, so we'll see.

OMG you scared me! I have to say, though, you have a really good girl. You did a great job with her and I hope my little girls are as respectful and honest as your daughter is. You handled it well 🙂

My daughter is 15 and she started out wanting to get her lip pierced I said no and settled for a small nose ring, that was about 6 months ago. The nose ring is gone but she came home the other day with the center of her lip pierced. ARGGHH what the H? I have to say it looks pretty cute but I cant tell her that. I guess she is getting old enough and it seems that her piercings never last for too long before she get s bored. The tattoo is next, I can feel it. A tattoo however could never be temporary so I am a little nervous for her

most clever post title ever! I really thought you let her get a tattoo. Not that there is really anything wrong with it but at 15 they just want hearts and flowers and junk, lol, nothing of real significance.

LOL I was waiting to see her "tattoo" and thinking man people are not going to be happy with your decision LOL. I let my daughter get airbrushed tattoo's they wash off pretty quickly.

Sounds like you have a great kid and good parenting.

It's good that you didn't punish her when she confessed. I want to be that way with my kids so they aren't like me: doing as a please and hiding it for fear of getting caught!
