Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
    All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

    The Rebel Chick blackbird tattoo

Black bird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
    all your life
you were only waiting for this moment to be free

    The Rebel Chick blackbird tattoo

    Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

    Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
    All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise,
You were only waiting for this moment to arise,
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

    The Rebel Chick blackbird tattoo

I have always identified "Blackbird" by The Beatles with death. I don't know why, I supposed I am just morbid that way. In my 33 years, I have seen a  lot of depression, misery and death around me - in both my friends and family.

I have been thinking of a way to memorialize my grandmother, who passed away last July, for a while now. I began thinking of a new tattoo in her honor last year, shortly after her death. I thought about getting a small purple orchid, her favorite color and her favorite flower. And then a very dear cousin of mine took his life in December. It broke my heart.

The idea began to snowball from there, and I began fixating on the song Blackbird whenever I thought of how I wanted to pay tribute to not only my grandmother, but my cousin as well. There have been three people in my life who were very troubled, who were never able to break free of the things that led them down the paths they ultimately found themselves on.

So, for my uncle Tony, who took his life years ago, for my grandmother who was killed when she was struck by a car last year, and for Adam, my cousin who took his life in December - this tattoo is for them.

May they find the peace in death that they were never quite able to find in life.

    *Blackbird lyrics by the Beatles

First thing I thought when I looked at the picture was Three Little Birds by Bob Marley...

Love the placement & the size. Excellent ink!

I absolutely love your blackbirds, they are beautiful, as is the tribute you've made to your loved ones. I would like to get something someday in memory of my Dad and Grandma, just not sure exactly what yet, it will have birds of some sort in it though!
