While in Colorado in the summer of 2012, my traveling companions and I had the opportunity to spend an afternoon exploring downtown Denver. To our good fortune, our friend Rajean, who lives in Castle Rock, recommended the best places to visit on our short afternoon!
We began our visit at Cru wine bar in Larimar Square, which was a lovely little section of downtown.
We had just arrived from the airport, so we were starving! Fortunately, Cru not only had an incredible selection of wine flights to choose from, but they also had a lovely menu!
The atmosphere of Cru was swanky and stylish. It reminded me of Bin, a wine bar and restaurant I frequent on ladies night out with my friends back home in Downtown Miami.
My favorite part of the decor in Cru was the wall of wine…
I ordered a simple white wine flight and I was not disappointed. I had a Rose, a Riesling and a Moscato – all three were delicious and I ended up ordering a glass of the Riesling. I know a little about wine, that is to say, I know enough to know what I like! If you are new to drinking wine, the staff at Cru will help you choose, or even make recommendations for you.
One of the things I most love about wine bars are the people that normally work there – the staff at Cru was friendly and charming and oh so helpful in recommending which dishes we should order to compliment the wine flights we chose.
I settled on the white truffle french fries, and my companions chose a pizza stopped with steak, tomatoes, red onions and arugula.
I had a bit of theirs, they had a bit of mine…it was an excellent meal and my only regret is that I did not have a big enough stomach to eat every single french fry on my plate – they were that good!
After finishing lunch, we headed to Writer’s Square, where a new candy store had recently opened. Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shop was the candy lover’s dream – they had everything from Japanese Kit Kat flavors to a wall of taffy.
A WALL OF TAFFY, PEOPLE.
I love taffy, so I had a blast going through the different flavors and selecting my goodies for the day. When all was said and done, I walked out with $45 in loot. It felt like Halloween, only a Halloween that I paid cash for…
I even got candy corn flavored taffy!
After stocking up on candy, we made our way around Writer’s Square for a few photos before heading to Breckenridge for the evening.
My first day in Denver was fantastic – it was the perfect beginning to a wonderful week in Colorado!
