It's true what they say, you never forget how to ride a bicycle! No matter how many years have passed since the last time I hopped on a bike, it's always as easy as pie to pick it back up. It had been years since I'd ridden a bike when it came time to teach Angeline how to ride a bike, but ever since then, bike riding has been one of my favorite ways to spend a lazy Saturday morning. We live near a park with a nature trail, and used to take to the trails whenever we could. Now that Angeline is older, we still ride but not as often...and that's going to change this summer!
That's right, summer is right around the corner, and it's time to go outside and ride! Before you start planning your summer activities, check out this helpful advice from Schwinn and don't forget to read all the way to the bottom of the post, where I'm sharing the Schwinn #RollIntoSummerWM Giveaway for a $100 Visa gift card and picnic basket!
Has it been a while since you've been on a bike? While you may not have any problems remembering how to ride this summer, there are still some precautions you should take - a bike checkup is the first step in getting ready for biking season! Think about it, our bikes sit in storage, in the backyard shed or sitting on the patio for the winter months - of course we need to give them a thorough once-over before getting on them. It's also important to make sure that our safety gear is still functioning and fits us correctly.
The Schwinn Bike Safety Checklist
- Helmet - Make sure that everyone in the family has a correctly-fitting helmet for bike riding.
- Tires - Check your tire pressure and tread! No one wants a nasty spill due to a popped tire!
- Brakes - Ensure that your breaks are functioning before going for your first ride.
- Seat - Adjust your seat to compensate for all of the growing the kids did over the winter!
- Reflector - ALWAYS use safety reflectors on bicycles.
- Pedals - Are your pedals nice and tight? No one wants a pedal spinning off while they're on a ride!
Check out this fun Schwinn Fun Family Ride Checklist - you can even print it out and stick it to the fridge to remind yourself before you go out on your first ride of the summer!
I learned to ride a bike when I was about 7 years old. I remember how excited I was when my parents gave it to me, and how grown up I felt riding it around the parking lot in front of our apartment complex. Once we moved to a house in a sprawling neighborhood with a huge park across the street, I felt like a super star!
Angeline has followed in my footsteps and set off with her cousins on their bikes to explore the neighborhood and ride through the trails at our park. Can you think of a better way to spend the weekend? Riding bikes is a wonderful way to get your family outside into the warm sunshine and enjoy the great outdoors while getting great exercise and HAVING FUN!
Tips For Making the Most of Your Family Bike Ride
Protect yourself! - Aside from the proper safety gear, protect your skin from the sun too! Always slather on the sunscreen before going for a ride.
Wear proper clothing and footwear! - Long, flowing dresses sure are cute during the summertime, but they can easily get caught in your pedals and spokes. Stick to shorts or form-fitting pants. Wear shoes that will stay ON your feet - it's all too easy for a flip flop to fall off your foot and cause you to lose your footing while riding.
Bring snacks and stay hydrated! - Always bring bottled water on juice boxes on your ride. If you have a sturdy backpack or a bicycle with a basket, try bringing a picnic basket full of goodies for your family to eat at the park!
Find a safe place to ride! - This should go without saying, but we all know that some places are safer than others for pedestrians and bicyclers. If you can find a park with a riding trail, or an area with a bike lane and not a lot of traffic.
Schwinn was established in 1895 and is America’s oldest bike brand, offering bikes for all types of riders and every type of terrains. Schwinn bikes are available at all Walmart stores and on Walmart.com. Not only are Schwinn Bikes affordable, but Schwinn Bikes offers a limited lifetime warranty for as long as you own the bike! We went shopping for a new bike for Angeline and loved the huge selection available at our local Walmart!
We even found the perfect Schwinn bike helmet in the accessories department! It's important to practice bike safety - even for older kids like Angeline!

My first bike was a Schwinn. I need to buy a new bike this summer to enjoy some family bike time.

We are not big on bike rides in our family, but we LOVE going for hikes. I think as long as we are outdoors and having fun together, that is what counts.
It really is important to wear helmets. I see little kids without them and I gasp. 😉

We live in a rural area, but on a busy road. Which is so weird to me. It's not safe to ride a bike on so we have to go to the park to ride.
I love the looks of the trike with the basket. Family bike rides are a great way to get out and have some fun together.

We love going on family bike rides. Where we live, helmets are required by law for anyone age 1-17, which I think is awesome!
Schwinn bikes are the best! We won one at a supermarket a decade ago and my son used it all the way through high school and college.
These are some very important tips for bikers to keep in mind. Schwinn provides quality bikes that last.
We love riding bikes and I've had a Schwinn for many years! I love that you're enjoying being outdoors and riding your bike with your daughter!

I only ride when away on vacation but this is a great idea for riding at home with the family. Thanks for sharing a great giveaway.
My daughter and I go bike riding probably 3 times a week. I enjoy doing it with her - although I do need a new bike as mine is getting pretty old!

Great tips! My goal last summer was to teach Mykl how to ride so we could go on family biking adventures, but that never happened. I'm making sure it does this year!
I totally rocked a schwinn bike growing up. That was our fav thing to do as kids. I wish my family was more interested in that hobby. But at least we take family walks.
We recently purchased a bike for eaveryone in the family. The hubby's is a schwinn. Now that I see that three wheel with the basket I wish I had waited. That one looks like it would be perfect for me.
My kids love riding their bikes so much! Soon, we will bring them bike riding with their little helmets and knee pads.
