I was approached by She Speaks to review Haylie Pomroy’s The Fast Metabolism Diet book, which includes a 28 day process of leaning how to eat healthier without counting calories or grams of fat. Since the eating plan I was already on kind of worked the same way, I thought it would be a good fit for me and gave it a go!
Why is dieting so damn hard? Why wasn’t I born without taste buds – or an appetite? I did the Fitfluential DietBet in March…and I didn’t quite make it.
The hilarious thing about this is the last week, I only had .5 pound to go. Then I went to San Jose and it all kind of fell apart. The diet plan that I have been on since November taught me how to eat better, and I was succeeding in continuing to lose weight after leaving the Dr’s guidance in February. But sit me down in a bistro in San Jose and it all goes out the window. Wine? Sure! Cheese? Sure! Ravioli in a brown butter sauce with fried sage? Yes, please!
I didn’t have access to a scale while in California, so that was part of my problem. When I came home, I found that my weight had shot up to 120…yeah, that was disheartening. I knew that much of it would melt right back off when I started eating right again, so I wasn’t too worried. What I didn’t realize is that when you eat naughty foods for an extended period of time, it’s really difficult to get back on track. Instead of continuing to lose weight, I ended up struggling just to maintain my weight loss.
The Fast Metabolism Diet is essentially a workout for your metabolism. One of the major selling points for me was that they say by following the Fast Metabolism lifestyle, you’ll gain a healthier body, clearer skin, stronger hair and nails – it’s so much more than just a weight loss plan!
Now, I know that this kind of clean, healthy eating is the way I should be eating all of the time. Through all of my years of struggling with my weight, I have learned all about different diets and the way different foods effect your body. But sometimes it’s just easier to eat the right way when you have it all laid out right in front of you – like in the form of a book!
About The Fast Metabolism Diet
Haylie Pomroy has helped thousands of clients lose up to 20 pounds in just four weeks -all through the fat-burning power of food. Haylie says “This is not a book for first-time dieters. This is a book for last-time dieters.” Hailed as “the metabolism whisperer,” Haylie reminds us that food is not the enemy, it’s the rehab needed to rev-up your sluggish, broken-down metabolism and turn your body into a fat-burning furnace.
My Experience with the Fast Metabolism Diet
The first thing I noticed about the plan was that you can’t eat wheat, corn, dairy, soy, refined sugar, caffeine, alcohol, fruit juice and artificial sweeteners. These are things I’d already given up on my eating plan, so I immediately felt more at ease, knowing that the dietary changes wouldn’t be too great! I was allowed to use artificial sweeteners before, but I try not to. The only thing I was actually eating on a regular basis that wasn’t allowed was my delicious iced coffee…I learned that coffee on an empty stomach kills your metabolism because it pulls sugar from your muscles to balance your hormones. Le sigh. Cue the withdrawal headaches!
Portion control is something I’ve just recently really learned to do the right way, and fortunately for me, most of the foods you’re supposed to eat on the Fast Metabolism Diet are the exact foods that my Dr had me eating on my approved eating plan last year and earlier this year. I was already eating most of the foods recommended, making the recommended recipes, though I wasn’t eating on a set schedule and rarely had snacks.
I have to be honest and say that I didn’t do very well on the plan. While I loved that you don’t count calories, fat grams or carbs on the Fast Metabolism Diet, I am really horrible at exercising…and didn’t do any at all for the entire month.
I know, I know…lack of exercise is my issue PERIOD, not just while I was doing the Fast Metabolism Diet!
An outline of the Fast Metabolism Diet eating plan:
Phase I (Monday-Tuesday): Lots of carbs and fruits
Phase II (Wednesday-Thursday): Lots of proteins and veggies
Phase III (Friday-Sunday): All of the above, plus healthy fats and oils
Why the structured eating plan? Haylie Pomroy says that by keeping your metabolism guessing in this way, it will start working faster.
Exercise while on the Fast Metabolism Diet:
You are supposed to exercise for at least 30 to 40 minutes on Monday and Tuesday. If you already exercise regularly, you should be doing cardio for 45 to 75 minutes.
On Wednesday and Thursday, you should be doing weight lifting. Haylie Pomroy suggests getting a personal trainer or joining a group strength-training class…neither or which are things that I would actually do. On Friday and Saturday, you’re supposed to do relaxation exercises, like yoga.
See why I failed so miserably at the exercise portion of the Fast Metabolism Diet program? I stink at exercising, it’s really something that I need to change about myself!
Even though I didn’t exercise – aside from running through the airport trying to catch a flight while traveling – I managed to lose two pounds last month. Ha! I think that I would have lost more if I wasn’t traveling so much while I was doing the Fast Metabolism Diet program.
