There are so many allergies out there that it’s hard to keep them all straight. Nut allergies, dairy allergies, soy allergies, gluten-free diets…
Half the time I am making treats for guests or gift-recipients, I have no idea what to make to avoid killing someone through an allergic reaction. When Halloween time rolls around, I want to hand out my favorite chocolates, but half of the kids I meet are allergic to peanuts – and the other half are either gluten intolerant or their parents have them on a gluten-free diet for health and behavior reasons.
What is a candy-handing-out mom to do on Halloween?
STOCK UP ON SMARTIES!
Smarties candies are the one candy that you can hand out to practically anyone and know that they can eat them without being in danger of setting off some horrible allergy. Smarties are quickly becoming a popular party favor and Halloween treat because they are the “worry free” or ”one size fits all” candy choice! They aren’t expensive, so they are budget friendly to every family, and they are gluten free, vegan, low calorie and free of all of the top allergens. Dude, Smarties are even a fat-free Halloween treat!
What’s not to love about Smarties candies?
With Halloween right around the corner, I wanted to try something cute and fun for handing out my Smarties to the trick-or-treaters. We usually only get about 20 kids because there aren’t a lot of children in our neighborhood anymore, so I can actually afford to do something a little special for them! I went to Walgreens right down the street and bought some simple rolls of original flavor Smarties (did you know that they now made tropical fruit flavored Smarties too?!) and then I made a quick run to JoAnn Fabrics and bought some Halloween-inspired pipe cleaners.
Now, my original plan was to make spiders but while supporting some of the other bloggers participating in the #IAmASmartie campaign, I saw someone also had that idea. And her spiders came out way better than mine did, so I scratched that idea to save myself the embarrassment!
Instead of spiders, I decided to make some Halloween creepy crawly Smarties treats!
All you need to get started are some Smarties candy rolls and pipe cleaners….
Step 1 – Wrap a pipe cleaner around the end of a Smarties candy roll, making sure to leave a little bit of end on each side.
Step 2 – You will need to use two pieces of pipe cleaner for each Smarties candy roll. Once you wrap one piece around the Smarties candy roll, begin wrapping piece #2 but make sure to leave a little bit sticking out on the opposite side of the first piece – these will be legs!
Step 3 – Wrap the second pipe cleaner all the way to the end of your Smarties candy roll until there is just a small piece of pipe cleaner left, which will be the last leg!
And there you have a little creepy crawly!
You can make them in different colors to make things more interesting too!
You can also make a little caterpillar by locking the “legs” together and alternating the colors of the pipe cleaners to create a pattern.
