Have you heard about the awesome Capri Sun Big Pouch American Pickers Adventure contest featuring Mike Wolfe, creator and star of American Pickers on History? I grew up with my mom and both of my grandmothers taking me along on their picking adventures: we went everywhere from yard sales to thrift stores, to auctions and flea markets. My mom spent so much time picking that she began selling her finds on eBay a few years ago! So you can imagine, a love of picking (or “going junking” as my Mamaw would say) runs deep in my blood – and my teenage daughter, Angeline’s as well!
The Capri Sun Big Pouch American Pickers Adventure Contest
All you have to do to enter the Capri Sun Big Pouch American Pickers Adventure is go to the Capri Sun Big Pouch page and upload a photo of something cool you’ve bought while out picking and register to win! The contest is open to legal residents of the 48 Contiguous U.S. & DC, 13 years or older. So that means that even your teenagers are eligible to enter to win! Angeline is 15 so she can enter too – she is already trying to think of super cool stuff to find on our next picking adventure so that she can register herself!
The contest began on September 6th, 2013 and ends at noon on October 15, 2013 – that’s Eastern Standard Time, so watch your clock closely!
American Pickers Adventure Prizes
The contest winner and 3 of their guests will meet up with Mike Wolfe, creator and star of American Pickers on History, and do a half day of picking in Nashville, Tennessee!
Of course, there are other prizes to be won! 100 winners will win a Capri Sun Pickers Prize Pack that includes; Messenger Bag, Magnifying Glass, Gloves, Bandanas, Flashlights, Journal, Pen, T-shirt, Kid Pickers Book, Carabineers
I’m totally psyched about this Capri Sun Big Pouch American Pickers Adventure. Angeline and I totally crush on the picking expertise of Mike Wolfe, creator and star of American Pickers on History Channel. He knows everything there is to know about picking!! Of course, Frank is equally entertaining and knowledgeable, but his main thing is toys and that’s not really our bag.
I put together our own little picking kit and Angeline and I set out to find some treasures of our own this last weekend so that I can enter the contest too!
Of course, no picking adventure is complete with snacks – it was in the high 80’s this weekend, even though it was rainy! I stopped by Walmart to pick up some Capri Sun Big Pouch drinks – one for each of us. They’re big enough that one is all you need, and they’re only .88 cents each! I love the Capri Sun Big Pouch Fruit Punch flavor, but Angeline loves the Capri Sun Big Pouch Strawberry Kiwi flavor.
With my recipe posts being such a big part of my blogging, I really wanted to find some new dishes and props for my food photography. My mom has taught me that you don’t have to go far to find a great deal on items like this, and she picks up stuff for me all the time.
I actually drove right past a yard sale down the street from our house and that was our first stop. Of course, when you have a teenager picking with you, you’re going to end up stopping to look at clothes and make up, but dishes were my top priority!
We came across a little selection of dishes and glassware – can you believe that these were only 50 cents each?! I almost bought some but honestly, I have so many little glasses like this already – thanks to my mom! I actually have four of those exact same trifle bowls that she gave me last year!
I ended up with quite the haul – all of this for only $3.00! My mom would be so proud of me!
My Mom’s Tips for Picking
- Don’t be afraid to negotiate – or to walk away from an item. Yard sellers and flea markets WANT to get rid of their merchandise and make a quick buck. Always offer a few dollars below the amount you’re really willing to pay, because you need room to negotiate.
- Always carry $1 bills with you. It’s much easier to haggle with a seller when you don’t have to whip out a $20 when you just talked them down to $2.
- Know the value of an item. There are times when my mom knows that a painting is worth way more than its $5 price tag. If she thinks something might be valuable, she calls me to Google it because she doesn’t have a smart phone. Ha!

My daughter would love the tea cups for her tea parties!
You should check out Goodwill and Salvation army, they usually have stuff like this for 50 cents or a dollar! 🙂
I love browsing through flea markets, yard sales and any kind of used stuff sales, although I’m probably not very good at it. I know what I want, but I’m not so great at haggling. In fact, I’m really bad at it.
I used to be too nervous to try to haggle but after seeing how often my mom gets a better deal that way, I started doing it! The worst that can happen is that they say no!
My in-laws yard sale and flea market all the time. And they get awesome deals and then she turns around about once a month and has her own yard sale and sells the stuff for 2-3 times the amount she paid for it. #truestory 🙂
Hey, whatever works! My mom opened up her eBay business because she was able to find so many antiques at yard sales, flea markets and thrift stores! She once bought a David Herman necklace at Goodwill for $7 and then turned around and sold it on eBay for $250!
That makes total sense about having singles when you’re bargaining. I must say that at my garage sales when someone wanted something for 50 cents and then gave me a $20 dollar bill, I was a little miffed.
HA HA! See, that’s exactly why I say to bring singles. Heck, even bring pocket change if you have it handy! It also makes it easier on the person holding the yard sale because they don’t have to worry about making change for every sale.
I had no clue what picking was before seeing all these posts – now I’m going to go on a mission to go picking and find some awesome stuff on the cheap!
My favorite places to go are Goodwill and Salvation Army because they have set prices for most things. And the employees don’t usually know when something is valuable, so it’s still as cheap as the generic stuff. I once bought a Wedgewood honey jar for $1 that could easily have gone for $20! They just didn’t know the brand name. 🙂
I had no idea what picking is until now. I need to start picking! lol.
Not fan of flea markets, but still got on this page somehow 🙂 So, I googled a bit and found out about picking. Thanks to you by the way…Appreciate positive atmosphere and the speed of the contest. I am about to sell my collection of sunglasses and spoons…Yes, I might sound strange, but seem to like the rules of the game 🙂
Looks like you found some good treasures on your pick! I love your mom’s advice for picking. #client
