While in LA for an all-expenses paid trip to attend the world premiere of Disney Pixar’s Finding Dory last week, I was treated to an extra special presentation focusing on the PIXAR IN A BOX program. Now, don’t feel bad if you’re a Disney Pixar fan and you’ve never heard of it – because I hadn’t either!
So what exactly IS PIXAR IN A BOX?
Disney Pixar really wanted to bring people at home a way to learn more about design and programming that makes everyone’s favorite animated movies, and they came up with this amazing plan…create a FREE home-based learning system that teaches how math & artistry work together in digital animation!

While this is a perfect system for young people, it’s also a pretty cool way for adults to see how you can code and program graphics that go into making animated movies…while I must admit that I had a hard time following along at first – math is NOT my forte – even I was able to grasp the concept once I saw it in action.
There are tutorials available FOR FREE – that’s right, an entirely free catalog – on Khan Academy, and it’s one of those systems where you can do individual lessons, or create an account and work your way through the catalog, one lesson at a time. Can you see where I am going with this? Think homeschooling lessons, coops and home-led learning – the sky is really the limit with this kind of resource!
You can do everything from learn how to do special effects, make animated patterns, rigging – this is an amazing resource for people kids (or anyone!) who wants to explore the world of animation!
Pixar in a Box produces 12 new lessons each year, and right now their entire catalog is available in English, Spanish and Portuguese!
