My daughter has been asking me for a few weeks now when we were going to be able to see the Disney Channels new movie, Teen Beach Movie. Every day I told her just a few more days and then I had a very bad mom moment and completely forgot to set up the DVR for it’s premier on the 19th. Luckily we were sent a copy and we received it in the mail just a few days after the premier. To make it extra special (and to help with the serious mommy guilt) I made it into a full blown movie night, complete with popcorn and ice cream!
If you haven’t seen the trailer for the movie here is a video giving you a glimpse into the movie.
Before McKenzie/Mac (Maia Mitchell) leaves to start her new life with her Aunt Antoinette (Suzanne Cryer) she is compelled to ride the waves one last time. While out surfing the waves get bigger and the sky gets darker. Being the good boyfriend Brady (Ross Lynch) rushes out and jumps in to save Mac from the growing current but instead they both get pulled under and when they reemerge things are not the same. The storm is gone, the waves are calm and the people are…different.
People go into the ocean yet their hair never gets wet, everyone sings, and clothes just magically change. What kind of world is this? Somehow, someway both Mac and Brady have been transported back into 1962 and into the movie Wet Side Story! All Mac wants to do is get back home so she can start her new life but Brady thinks the whole thing is pure awesome, it is his favorite movie you know. Besides what is the harm in dancing and singing? The only down side is they landed right smack in the middle of a turf war between the surfers and the bikers.
Sounds a little reminiscent of Grease doesn’t it. There are definite similarities between the two but it’s not the same story line at all. While watching the movie my daughter had a perma smile on the.entire.time. Seriously I don’t think a minute went by where she wasn’t full of excitement. Singing and dancing is her thing and she instantly fell in love with this movie. I really enjoyed the movie as well. I’ll be honest here and admit I have never watched a Disney Channel movie/musical like this before. In fact I avoided them like the plague but the whole idea of this movie appealed to me and I was not disappointed. The songs were catchy (Am I just a prop is my fav) and it had a little bit of grown up humor added in while still tasteful. One of my favorite lines is when Brady says “I’ll be back as soon as I can get that smoking girl to hate me”. The dancing and the singing was not overdone and again it was all done very tastefully while still fun and engaging for the younger watchers. I would recommend this movie for anyone who has a child that loves singing and dancing.
This coming Saturday, July 27th at 8:00 pm EST you can watch a Dance Along telecast that will be hosted by the cast of Teen Beach Movie! And on Tuesday, July 30th Teen Beach Movie will be released on DVD at retailers nationwide! You can also pre-order the soundtrack on iTunes today, which I’ve already done and put on CD for my daughter.
Disclosure: I was sent an advanced copy of Disney Channels Teen Beach Movie in exchange for this review. All opinions included in this post are my own.
