If you read my blog regularly, then you know that I have made a lot of changes in the past year: I quit smoking, I went on a diet and lost over 30 pounds, and I’ve been trying to eat less processed foods. I’m not the only one who has made changes; Angeline started eating healthier even before I did, and has lost 20 pounds over the last year!
Some of our dietary changes were easier than others. I stopped buying cookies, candy, chips except for special occasions, and started making more meals from scratch without the help of canned or packaged products. It’s more work, but judging by our waistlines, it’s worth it! What’s more is that I feel better – and so does Angeline! She always had stomach issues with certain meals that I made, and she rarely complains anymore. I think that cooking with less additives and artificial ingredients is easier on her digestive system, and it’s a great motivator for both of us to keep it up!
I wish that it was as simple as saying, “oh eat an apple or some strawberries” when she comes home from school and wants a fun snack…but as much as she loves fresh fruit, sometimes it’s boring to eat the same old thing over and over again – even if you like it. So I have been experimenting with healthier alternatives to the old after-school snacks of peanut butter and crackers, fruit snacks and cookies and chips.
Walmart just started carrying these new Fruti natural fruit bars made by National Fruit Corporation, which is headquartered right here in Miami at Hialeah! I was asked to give them a try and I was happy to be able to support my local businesses, you can see my full shopping story in this Google+ story. They’re fresh fruit bars that are a great alternative to ice cream, and something that Angeline can really be excited about eating, whether it be after school as a snack or for dessert!
Something that I’ve been thinking a lot about lately, just from a general health perspective, is GMOs. I would really like to try to avoid them as much as possible. We can’t afford to eat only organic food, and quite honestly, even if we could, it’s pretty hard to find organic everything in Miami. Whenever I see anything with the Non-GMO project seal on it, I can buy it and know that I am feeding my family natural foods.
It’s a great feeling – and that I can buy a 4 pack of Chunks O’Fruti bars for just $1.98 at Walmart and it’s Non-GMO verified? THAT’S AWESOME.
Chunks O’Fruti uses only premium fruit ingredients, including freshly frozen fruit or packed fruit pieces that are delivered to their facilities right after harvesting. Fresher is always better when it comes to fruits and veggies! And Fruti’s “Fruit First Formulation” means that their fruit bars contain more fruit than any other ingredient. Because there is so much fruit in each bar, there is no need for added colors or flavors.
You know what that means? No High Fructose Corn Syrup!
I made Angeline and myself a Chunks O’Fruti Strawberry Pina Colada Smoothie Sunday morning for breakfast and they were so delicious!
Chunks O’Fruti Strawberry Pina Colada Smoothie Recipe
1 Chunks O’Fruti Strawberry Pina Colada bar, cut into chunks
4 Strawberries, halved
1/3 cup pineapple, cut into chunks
1 cup fat-free organic milk
Put it all in the blender – use the smoothie setting if you have one – and blend for one minute.
Yeah, it’s that easy!
