How Celebrities Influence Plastic Surgery Trends

Just like many women bring in a photo of their favourite celebrity to the hairdresser’s to request the same hairstyle, plastic surgery clients use celebrities to describe the final look they most desire.

As a result, celebrities have a big impact on cosmetic surgery trends. Men and women alike flock to plastic surgeons to ask for Jennifer Aniston’s chin or Brad Pitt’s nose, as well as asking how to avoid a bad nose job altogether.

And when a popular celeb admits that they’ve had work done, the procedure tends to skyrocket in popularity as well! Let’s take a closer look at some of the most popular celebrity-inspired cosmetic surgery trends.

Top Trends for 2014

At the moment, one of the hottest celebrity-influenced beauty trends is Botox and other skin treatments. Influenced by the smooth skin of ageless celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, many women are requesting contouring, facial fillers, and Botox treatments. Breast augmentation and liposuction continue to be popular surgeries for women, while men are requesting eyelid lifts, body contouring, and Botox as well. Plenty of famous men have admitted to having a little nip and tuck, including Simon Cowell, Burt Reynolds, and Howard Stern. This has helped make it more acceptable for men to ask for work to be done as well. Chin implants are a popular procedure for both men and women, seen on Howard Stern and Ashlee Simpson. A strong jawline can balance other facial features.

Most Requested Celebrity Looks

There are a few celebrities with a look that gets requested time and time again. Pippa Middleton’s backside has become the influence for butt implants and contouring for many women, ever since she showed it off in that white dress at the royal wedding. Natalie Portman’s classic beauty has influenced many women to request a rhinoplasty to get her perfectly delicate nose, while many women seek out smooth skin like Katy Perry and Gwyneth Paltrow with the help of injectable treatments. For men, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Mark Walberg are major influences. Men want the jaw line and nose of Brad Pitt, the forehead of Tom Cruise, and the body of Mark Walberg.

Going to Extremes

Although many plastic surgery clients use their favourite celebrities as a guideline for their procedures, some take it to extremes. One example of this is the recent story of a woman spending upwards of $25,000 to look exactly like Jennifer Lawrence. To achieve this goal, she had liposuction, fat grafting, a breast augmentation, and a rhinoplasty to try and gain Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscar winning looks. This is just one extreme example of how celebrity looks can inspire people to get extensive plastic surgery, but in most cases people simply get a single procedure done.

There are a number of ways that celebrities influence plastic surgery trends. On the one hand, when they admit to having a procedure done it can often spike in popularity, as is the case with Simon Cowell’s Botox treatments leading to an increase in men requesting this procedure. On the other hand celebrity body parts that receive a lot of attention, such as Pippa Middleton’s backside, can serve as inspiration to normal people who want to gain a more glamorous look. When looking at trends in cosmetic surgery, Hollywood has always been an important influence.

It’s surprising how cosmetic surgery became so popular in a span of years. Even more surprising are the reasons of people who have taken surgeries because they want to look like their favorite celebrities
