As you may recall from previous posts, I began reading a new book about changing my eating habits a while back. By the time quarantine began in Miami on March 27, I was 145 pounds. ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE POUNDS! My ideal weight is 115; to put things into perspective, I weighed 138 when I gave birth to Angeline, and she was 10.8 pounds! I began reading Always Eat After 7 PM: The Revolutionary Rule-Breaking Diet That Lets You Enjoy Huge Dinners, Desserts, and Indulgent Snacks—While Burning Fat Overnight by Joel Marion (is now available to purchase).
Why You Should Read Always Eat After 7PM by Joel Marion
Always Eat After 7 PM debunks popular diet myths and offers an easy-to-follow diet that accelerates fat-burning and allows you to indulge in your most intense food cravings: Eating the majority of your calories at night. If you suffer from insomnia, this new way of eating may help you sleep better as well. I find that while I am still waking up way too early (I usually wake up around 2-3 AM, but sometimes can sleep as late as 5:30 AM now), I am definitely falling asleep easier and sleeping more soundly. Yay for carbs at night!
“Specific higher-carbohydrate foods (including berries and cherries) support your fat-burning metabolism while you sleep, providing your body with a steady stream of fuel throughout the night. The trick is knowing how to combine them with other evening and pre-bedtime fat-burning foods to fuel your metabolism as you sleep.”
Hey, I will be the first person to admit that low carb diets work. But they just aren't sustainable over extended periods of time - like the TEN YEARS I did low carb. We have all been taught to avoid carbs, eat an early dinner, and never eat right before we go to before bed. However, the latest scientific research shows us this earlier model is not the most ideal and there are other ways to live healthy lives!
Who is Joel Marion?
Joel Marion is a fitness expert and nutritionist debunking the myths underlying traditional dieting and offers a simple, highly effective weight loss program. Joel Marion’s Always Eat After 7PM program makes dieting much easier and it eliminates 90% of reasons for resistance. It is much easier to follow his plan when I can eat that BBQ on weekends for dinner, or grab a handful of cherries before I hit the hay for the evening.
“Intermittent fasting really shines when it comes to improving the hormones that directly affect your hunger, blood sugar, and metabolism. One is insulin. IF combats insulin resistance, meaning that it helps your body use insulin more normally, thereby lowering your diabetes risk and boosting your metabolism.”
The Always Eat After 7 PM plan consists of: The 14-day Acceleration Phase to kick-start the program and see rapid results, The Main Phase where you’ll learn exactly which foods to eat when in order to achieve your weight-loss goals, The Lifestyle Phase to keep the weight off for good!
So How Did I Do on the Always Eat After 7 PM eating plan?
I have lost 12 pounds since April, and to be quite honest, I cheated quite a few times by drinking beer. I don't drink alcohol very often anymore, so I know that it threw off my weight loss. I used to fall asleep anywhere between 11-3 AM, and sleep for 1-2 hours at a time, waking up for the final time around 6 AM. I never got more than 3 hours of sleep at a time, and it can really mess with my focus and concentration.
Eating later in the day and allowing myself to have carbs is now allowing me to fall asleep anywhere between 8-11 PM, and I sleep straight through to 2-3, at least. Sometimes as late as 4:30 or 5 AM. I am averaging 5-7 hours of sleep total a night now, which is AMAZING! This is making more of a positive impact on my life than the weight loss, to be completely honest. I feel like a new person!
I am also able to eat pretty much whatever I want, with moderation. I missed pasta so much, it's such a blessing to be able to eat a delicious bowl of chicken fettuccine whenever I want. I have more energy, which makes exercising easier too because I am not so tired all of the time. I am also cooking more flavorful meals because I am not restricted by counting carbs anymore.
Is Intermittent Fasting Difficult?
I have stayed away from intermittent fasting for years. I scoffed at it, as I thought that it would encourage eating disorders. When I sat down and read the book, I realized that I had always misunderstood intermittent fasting! I am not a breakfast person, I have never been one to be hungry in the morning - I was basically fasting just BECAUSE...so not much has changed since I began the eating plan. I just have to wait a little longer to eat than I normally do. I always skipped breakfast anyway, and never began getting hungry til around 11. Now I wait until 2 PM. It hasn't been that difficult except for a few days, and I honestly cheated and had a small snack those days because if my stomach hurts, well - I am going to eat.
