Today I heard about The AIDS Service Center's "Safer Sex in the City" event, which is sponsored by Adult Toys retailer, EdenFantasys. I began to think about when I first really understand what AIDS was and how important events and community resource centers like this are to people suffering from HIV and AIDS.
When I was a senior in high school, I was part of a group called the Peer Mediators and Mentors. I expected to hear a lot of teenage girls crying about their boyfriends and "she looked at me the wrong way" arguments between my classmates. What I didn't expect was to have to take AIDS and STD courses in order to counsel my classmates with HIV.
Yes, I said classmates with HIV. In high school. Heartbreaking, isn't it? The AIDS rate in our school was supposedly so high that 30% of the blood bank donations made in that year's blood drive had to be discarded due to testing positive for HIV. Now, while I will never know if that was completely true, I do know that after the blood drive, I had to take these HIV courses and begin counseling students. I received three students to counsel.
While HIV is no longer the pandemic that it was during the 90's, it is still a very real and very serious threat. Which is why I was so happy to hear that EdenFantasys is sponsoring the AIDS Service Center‘s Safer Sex in the City event!
The AIDS Service Center's Safer Sex in the City event is held in NYC on June 23rd, and benefits the AIDS Service Center NYC, which is a resource that helps HIV-positive New Yorkers, and those at-risk, get a second chance to rebuild their lives.
And right now, EdenFantasys is also donating $1 for every “like” the Safer Sex in the City fan page receives on Facebook! Please, take a moment and "like" their page. It's for a really good cause.
