I'm going to Europe for a month in May. 1 week in Paris, 2 weeks in Nice and Monaco, then a week in London. I want to day trip into Italy once or twice. I was thinking about Ventimiglia or San Remo. San Remo is a little further on the train from Monaco but most reviews say Ventimiglia is a dump. I kinda want to see "the dump", the real Italy, and not a tourist area. I'm taking my nieces though and don't want to be murdered early in the trip, or have to go back and tell their parents "my bad". Have you ever been to either? Which would you recommend? I thought about Milan but it's too far for a day trip. 4 to 5 hours on a Thello train.

What an exciting trip you have planned! Unfortunately, I have not been to either place myself.
