Transitioning My Blog From A Hobby To A Business

2011 is quickly coming to an end and I keep thinking about everything that I’ve accomplished this year.

As of January 1, 2011, I was blogging my transition from workaholic to housewife just to flex my creative muscles; I wrote poetry, about my travels, trying my hand at the domestic thing…a few short months later, I learned that I could earn a few bucks off of my blog if I did it well and things went quickly from there!

By July, I was writing sponsored posts, doing product reviews, hosting giveaways, pitching public relations companies and finding my way through SEO, WordPress, Omniture, HTML and all of the other nuts and bolts of blogging. In October, on a press trip with other professional bloggers and travel writers, I realized that I had found my calling. I wanted to be a real blogger.

I wanted to do this for real.

I knew that I could accomplish a lot more with my blog if I were to really sink my teeth into it. I began learning about Google Page Rank, Alexa ranking, and networking.

By November 2011, I had achieved a Google PR of 2…which may not seem like a big deal compared to other more established bloggers, but to me? I wanted to pop the cork on a bottle of champagne. Not only was I learning, but what I was learning was beginning to pay off! I went from a brand new blog in April 2011 with a hundred or so page views a month and a N/A rank from Google to about 25,000 monthly page views and a Google PR of 2 in December.

I plan to keep the momentum growing in 2012.

Website optimization and growing my traffic – reaching new audiences and gaining new readers – will be my main focus in 2012. I’ll be doing my research on Omniture.com and doing a little work on my blog design, along with really focusing on my content on Rebel Chick’s Journey.

Instead of just writing about any old thing, I plan to narrow down my focus to what I originally planned for Rebel Chick’s Journey to be: a lifestyle blog with a focus on travel and entertainment. Those are my passions, the things that bring me joy and make me want to write!

What are your blogging goals for 2012?

That’s awesome! My GPR is 3, but my page views are less than 3k/month. So my goal is to increase that. I would love to see 25k/month and maintain my monthly income.

Congrats on your pageviews and good luck on working on your goals. Slow, but steady…
