When I was in elementary school, we had recess every day – my most vivid memories of my grade school years are of hanging upside down on the monkey bars, skipping rope with my girl friends and playing box-ball on the PE court.

After going to a private school for the first grade, my daughter went to the same elementary school that I had attended. So I was surprised when my daughter complained that she didn’t get to play outside like she did in her old school. I was learned that the elementary school only had one PE teacher, and the children were only allowed to take recess every other day – all due to lack of funding from the school board. I found this heartbreaking!

Children need recess to recharge their batteries – it isn’t easy for a young child to sit in a class and concentrate for long periods of time! Recess is so important to school children because they need to be able to run off some of their energy in order to be able to focus on their lessons. Doctors recommend at least 60 minutes of activity daily, and recess would easily fulfill that daily requirement for children! According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the lack of recess has become a national crisis leading to a growing epidemic: childhood obesity. That’s a scary thought, and the issue is gaining the attention of people around the country.

That’s where Dannon Danimals® comes in – the maker behind delicious and nutritious on-the go smoothies and yogurts – is motivating moms and kids alike to rally around this cause, by launching a national initiative called “Rally for Recess.”

What is it?

“Rally for Recess” creates healthy competition, pitting school against school. Five schools have the opportunity to win new playground equipment and an all-day recess celebration. Through February 8, 2012 you can find codes on Danimals packaging (or free by mail) to enter and register you school online. The top school in each of the five categories (based on size) with the most codes registered wins!

Although my daughter has moved on to middle school now, and has a PE class as part of her schedule, it is still only every other day! When she comes home on the days that she has PE, she is usually tired and hungry, because her PE class is the last one of the day, which also happens to be during the hottest part of the day here in Miami!

I keep a supply of Dannon Danimals in the fridge for a healthy, quick snack for after school. Sometimes she will even have one in the morning when we’re running late as a quick breakfast. When I have my nieces and nephews are over, I will give them a Danimals smoothie for a little snack too! My almost-two year old niece loves them!

I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Danimals and received a gift card to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate. All opinions are my own.

My kids love Danimals yogurt! My son has recess with his regular teacher. He only has gym class two days a week. Because the weather has been so nice still, there are days he even gets extra recess. It’s so important to them. I hate hearing how teachers take recess away as a punishment because really it’s what the kids need in order to sit still!
