Whether you are traveling for business or for pleasure, you want to make sure that your sensitive information stays safe at all times. The last thing that you want is for your passport to go missing or your credit cards to be stolen. In addition to being stuck far from home, you could have your identity stolen. What can you do to prevent that from happening to you?

Keep Everything Close to You

If you can, keep all important documents in a wallet or purse that you keep on you at all times. This makes it less likely that you will leave your driver’s license or travel plans on the plane or in the restaurant that you just ate dinner in. Even if you have a purse or a travel bag that you keep close to you, there is still a chance someone could take it without you noticing. While someone could still try to take something out of your pocket or take your purse as you carry it, you will notice and have time to react.

Ask for Digital Copies of Your Documents

If you can, ask that your plane tickets, hotel reservation and car rental reservation be sent to you electronically so that you can keep it on your phone. You may also be able to pay for your reservations with an app on your Smartphone or tablet. This enables you to use your credit card without having to worry that someone will steal it. Since your phone is generally on you at all times, there is less of a chance that you will lose it or that someone will steal it.

Ask for a Safe in Your Hotel Room

In some cases, it may be best if you don’t take your passport, drivers license and other sensitive documents with you if you don’t need them. Instead, you can keep them in a safe in your hotel room. If your room doesn’t have one, you may be able to request one from the front desk. Otherwise, it may be in your best interest to buy a safe or some other product that can be locked while you aren’t there to watch it.

Know How to Order a Credit Freeze

If your social security card, your passport or any other document is taken, you may want to freeze your credit report. This will enable you to prevent unauthorized credit inquiries that may be precursors to someone opening an account in your name. Once someone is able to get a mortgage or other loan in your name, you are responsible for making payments. Even if you can show that you were the victim of fraud, it can still take time to undo all the damage caused. When you order a freeze of your credit report, the credit agencies are required to call you each time an inquiry is conducted to verify that you authorized it to happen. If you can’t be reached, the request will be denied.

Your travel documents are your most important possessions while you are on the road. Without them, you may not be able to get back home without jumping through several hoops. Therefore, it is critical that you protect your information to ensure that you have a safe and hassle free trip.
