This post brought to you by Fellowes . All opinions are 100% mine.

You might recall seeing my post a while back about my family trying out the new Fellowes AeraMax™ DX-55 Air Purifier. We have been using it for about two weeks now, which I think is long enough to get an idea of the kind of results you would get with long term use. Before I begin sharing what I particularly like and dislike about it, let’s talk about WHY it’s so important to use an air purifier in your home!

You know, we are kind of in the middle of cold and flu season down here in Miami. And as much as we wash our hands, that doesn’t take care of all of the germs we come into contact with on a daily basis. Did you know that the flue germs can spread to people up to six feet away, even without a cough or sneeze to spread it? The viruses that cause the flu and colds can live on the surfaces and in the air of your home for up to 24 hours, and you can’t exactly wash those away when you wash your hands or use hand sanitizer!

You really need to take a few extra steps to avoid those nasty colds and flu germs floating around, and this 4 Step Process is your best bet for staying healthy!

The 4 Step Process for Avoiding the Flu and Colds

1. Ask about a flu shot – you will find that most pharmacies and clinics offer the flu shot, or you can always head down to your primary care physician as well! While the flu shot is not for everyone, it can be a big help in helping you avoid catching the flu this year!

2. Wash and sanitize hands regularly – this is key to avoiding catching any kind of illness, really. Germs live on the surface of doorknobs, desks, rails in public places – wash your hands throughout the day to keep your hands germ free!

3. Wipe down surfaces with disinfectants – the best way to keep your home free of germs is to use disinfectant when cleaning.

4. Purify the air indoors – we generally spend 90 percent of our time indoors, where the air is up to five times more polluted than it is outside! Using an air purifier, like the Fellowes® AeraMax™ DX55 Air Purifier, helps to eliminate the germs and viruses from the air in your home.

When you follow the 4-step process, including using an air purifier, you can significantly decrease your odds of catching a cold or the flu! The Fellowes® AeraMax™ DX55 Air Purifier is quite effective at removing influenza and cold viruses from indoor air!

About the Fellowes® AeraMax™ DX55 Air Purifier:

The Fellowes® AeraMax™ DX55 Air Purifier effectively purifies air in medium rooms up to 195 square feet. We have ours in our living room, which is where the entire family spends most of our time. This is also where our company sits when they visit, so it’s extra prone to harboring germs.

AeraSmart™ Sensor monitors the air quality and automatically adjusts the fan speed to keep your air purified. When I am sitting in the living room, I can literally see the lights changing as the purifier kicks into gear and turns itself on! It’s pretty cool to watch, and it’s awesome not having to worry about figuring out which setting to use or when it needs to be turned on.

The True HEPA filter with AeraSafe™ antimicrobial treatment safely removes 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns, including pollen, ragweed and other allergens, viruses, germs, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander and cigarette smoke too! This is kind of funny, but whenever Foxy walks past it, or lays down next to it, it kicks on…I’m guessing Foxy has a lot of dander in her fur!

Not only is it extremely effective at capturing influenza virus from indoor air (based on independent testing), but the carbon filter removes odors and captures large airborne particles too. I made a fancy dish for dinner on Sunday night that required me to chop onions. Our entire house reeked of raw onion so badly that my eyes were watering, even after I finished making dinner. The Fellowes® AeraMax™ DX55 Air Purifier kept running throughout the night and most of the day on Monday, helping to eliminate that nasty smell. It really did make a difference!

If you suffer from allergies, you’ll be happy to know that the it is also Certified asthma & allergy friendly™ by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America!

While the Fellowes® AeraMax™ DX55 Air Purifier is pretty quiet, it has a Fan Speed Indicator that allows you to manually adjust the fan speed setting between low, medium, high or turbo. While we were getting rid of that nasty onion odor, it was running on Turbo! And for you forgetful types (that would be me), there are Filter Change Indicators that let you know when it is time to replace your Carbon or True HEPA filter!

As I said, we have the Fellowes® AeraMax™ DX55 Air Purifier sitting right in our living room, near the front door. I like that it’s sleek and modern, so it isn’t an eye sore in our home decor.

I especially love that the Fellowes® AeraMax™ DX55 Air Purifier is Energy Star-qualified! Using less energy and saving money on our light bill is so important to me! Energy Star-qualified air purifiers are 40% more energy-efficient than non-qualifying models. With as often as our air purifier runs, that 40% presents a huge savings opportunity for us!

What are you doing to keep your home germ free this cold and flu season? Or do you just need to find a way to help keep allergens at bay for your family? You can purchase the Fellowes® AeraMax™ DX55 Air Purifier, which starts at $189.99, on!

The air purifier looks like it came out of the movie TRON. That’s the first thing that came to mind when i saw the photo! We have an air purifier in our home as well and I have noticed it has decreased the dust by quite a bit. My daughter has mild allergies and it has made a huge difference. With a toddler at home we can use all the help me can get! Nothing is better than clean air :)

Removing odors from the air is a huge bonus on top of purifying it. We could totally use this because my husband loves cooking with garlic and onions. It’s not uncommon to see an open window after dinner here!

I did not know that about the flu virus being able to spread in the air like that even w/o a sneeze or cough. We could use an air purifier in our basement!
