As of January 1st, 2012, Express Scripts Inc has decided that Walgreens – which includes Walgreens pharmacies nationwide and Duane Reade in the NYC area – will no longer be in it’s network.
People affected by this change are left wondering, WHY? There are no foreseeable benefits to customers by the exclusion of Walgreens from their network. In fact, thousands of customers will now face the challenge of finding a new pharmacist, but they may be forced to drive out of the way to find pharmacists whose hours are not as convenient as the Walgreens 24 hour store policy. To add insult to injury, Express Script Inc customers are not even seeing a decrease in their rates due to their dropping Walgreens from their network.
You can read more about the dropping of Walgreens from the Express Script Inc networks in this press release: Walgreens and Express Scripts.
One of the most critical issues involved in the split between Express Scripts Inc and Walgreens was the issue of Tricare. If you aren’t familiar with Tricare, it is the healthcare plan that our United States military uses – now that Express Scripts Inc has dropped Walgreens from its network, anyone using the Tricare healthcare system may be affected. Walgreens wants to help support and serve the troops and it seems that Express Scripts is standing in the way of that.
Walgreens wants to help not just the military, but anyone being affected by this change, so they are offering a special discount on annual membership for its Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens.
If you are being affected by this change, please reach out to your local media to bring this issue to their attention. You can support Walgreens and stay updated by liking Walgreens on Facebook and following Walgreens on Twitter.
